Oakmasters UK : News : A Rural Cottage is extended with a Sun Room

In 2005 Oakmasters manufactured and erected an oak sun-room designed to make the most of the stunning rural views near a timber-frame home in Burwash. The existing, charismatic build boasts a unique panorama of the British countryside and plans were drawn for a considerable sized sun room of approx 6m x 3 ½ m. It was essential that the extension remained in keeping with the traditional elements of the original house, whilst maximising visual space.

The final structure retains a feeling of the contemporary, combining a rural-style oak frame with glazing and a tiled roof. Every effort was made by Oakmasters to match their oakwork with the style of the original house, drawing influence from the large roof trusses and Tudor style cladding. Essential provisions were also made to minimise shrinkage in the wood preventing the risk of gaps appearing between the frame and the glass and maintaining a waterproof barrier.

An elegant truss, flanked by hand-wrought posts and complemented by simple French windows act as the central feature of the striking sun-room. Whilst being a considerable enlargement to the property the sun-room creates a new and exceptional visual dimension, harmonizing with the original build, yet adding to it a unique quality.
