Oakmasters UK : Oak Beams : Information : The Material Facts

Oak is an incredibly strong and durable material. Look around at British architecture which has stood the test of time and it is clear in a multitude of cases that it is a sturdy frame, fabricated from Oak, which is responsible for the long term resilience and beauty of such buildings.

A frame constructed from oak will last virtually forever; it does not need treating with preservatives because it is naturally resistant to weathering and insects.

Therefore the structural and aesthetic benefits of an oak frame are significant. As an oak frame dries out it shrinks across the grain causing the joints in the cellular structure to tighten up, strengthening the frame further still. However, this drying process also causes minor splits known as shakes –along the grain.

This can frighten self-builders but is part of the natural process and, as centuries of success with this material will testify, adds greatly to the building's charm. More information is available by clicking on FAQ.

Oak's natural hue is very subtle and pleasing, but framing specialists finish their structures in a variety of ways. For example, it is common practice to sandblast the entire frame after erection to take out iron stains to which oak is susceptible as a result of sawing in its green state. Oakmasters use an adzing and fuming process instead, to achieve a high quality finish.
